i'm digging those goggles the guys are sporting, very hip accessory there
Boston fans should just take a deep breath--actually, a whole set of deep breathing exercises should be engaged in at this point, something along the order of a 10 second deep inhale through nose--hold 10 seconds--exhale for 10 seconds--repeat at least 5 times.

After that, they should consider their chances of fixing the end of their bullpen and the return of Manny. I would suggest the possible sacrifice of 10 female virgins from bosox nation to the baseball gods. Now, I understand this could create a problem on 2 fronts--(1)finding those virgins who are over the age of 10 and (2)issues to follow involving child abuse. These issues are small potatoes, though, when another trip to the World Series is on the line.

This can be endured. I lived through the Cleveland last week of '05 collapse and I'm still breathing today. They should realize that the likelihood that they won't at least grab the wild card is very small, akin to the likelihood that our POTUS is not either evil or an idiot, (one or the other--no gray here) and should simply pray that their first round match up, presumably with either the Indians or the Angels, which is what it would have been if they'd been on a 10 game win streak right now, is favorable for them.
ah, the Doings of 05. as a season ticket holder of the Mob City Orrrrrioles i remember said epoch quite well. i would venture to say that cleveland fans may well have survived said 05 frolics, but did not emerge with psyches fully intact. you'd know better than me about this, no doubt.

in any case, let's enjoy the spectacle fully and with gusto

That is definitely the kind of car a boston fan would drive.
Have fun fellows. The yanks are about to play a bird of a different feather; as are the Sox.

Wow. This was a fun thread until that last photo, urCh. That cuts to the quick.

It's come to this....a co-worker of mine and I were commiserating this A.M. and I said, "At least the Tigers lost yesterday."
I hear you, '74. From my experience irony is just as important a fact of life as moments of happiness and sadness, success and failure, being "sharp" and doofoidal breakdowns.

It's still all about who you want to face in the first round, CLE or LA, and who's got home field advantage--and yes, there is that rather weird format this year relating to off days-----enter Spike, giving thorough clarity here.

I saw one of those ESPN baseball pundits last evening, forget which one, who was explaining how it would be in Boston's best interest to allow the Yankees to win the East, as it would increase the pressure on the Yanks, causing them to collapse--there were specific associations between "collapse" and one Rod, A.
More Widespread Panic

ole man francona is getting the worst of that mail, i'd say

My aforementioned co-worker and I were riffing this A.M. on whether, at this juncture, with a minute chance of missing the playoffs, it was more important to try to win the division or to go into October with everyone as healthy as possible and with the starting pitching set in the best order possible. We opted for the latter, recalling in great detail the playoffs of 1999 (sorry to bring up painful history, b4).

The Sox and Tribe engaged in a titanic struggle that year, with 79 total runs scored in the five games, ultimately won by the Carmine Hose after having been down two games. It will be recalled that the games had scores of 11-1, 9-3, 23-7, and, in the finale, 12-8 after being tied at 8 through four innings. The pitching staff of the Sox was decimated in that series, while the Yanks, having had the luxury of playing their cousins from Arlington for the third time in four playoff years and sweeping them again, had several days to rest and get their pitching staff in order. The Bombers then dispatched the Sox quickly; they were able to match their one certain loser, Roger Clemens, who I still maintain is the worst post-season pitcher who will be in the HOF, with the one certain win of the Sox, Pedro Martinez. Clemens was out of the game by the third inning of the only game the Sox won in that series.

Back to the present. At this juncture, fearing a repeat of that post-season if the Sox attempt to try to win the division at all costs, I would opine that they should rest their pitchers, including some of the bullpen people like Okajima who appear to be gassed, and also use Manny (bad oblique) and Youkilis (bad wrist) and even Ortiz as sparingly as possible over the next week. It's still possible for this team to make a run in the playoffs, but only if they're at full strength and rested.
I think we have a breakthrough in idiot fan detection. I thought that I identified a marker while reading the State boards during the OCain, Sendek, Amato periods. I have now decided that if I read the phrase 'deer in headlights', I get to stop reading the post in which it appears. Is that not the signature of the uninformed cliche fairweather fan?
Francona is a players manager, who has managed a team to the best record in baseball. I know the convention is to consider all the success to be due to the players and all the failures are due to the manager/coach.

Now I know why I keep coming back. Astute observations re: the sport like the aboveSmile
i have yet to make my first astute internet observation about baseball or any other subject and do not plan on launching any new initiatives in this regard any time soon. i find that the message board environment does not lend itself well to astuteness. to the contrary, aggravation leads to page views, surely we can all accept this as gospel here in late aught seven
Beckett might have reached Pantheon Status this postseason...
bumpity bump bump
and it's confirmed: Beckett did reach Pantheon status.
