Inspired by the watering holes thread, I figured we should include the food too!

Most of my favorite places are long gone. The Porthole was probably the first "good" eats I had while a student (i.e., something other than a can of Ravioli heated on the dorm room hot plate). Good food, cheap, and the waiters were true characters.

I miss Sadlack's. Great sandwiches, and it was always fun to watch people try to figure out which rest room to use--they were marked only with those male/female circle symbols, and it seems at least half the people couldn't get it right.

Brady's at the bottom of the hill on E. Franklin was a real treat--great home-style cooking. Their fried chicken couldn't be beat.

Anyone remember Quikee Take-out (aka Mariakaki's)? Is that place still around?

Your favorites?
last time i looked, Quickee take-out was there (been a few years tho)

funny-odd story from there. we had one of the classic old waitresses one afternoon there and we pointed out a troll-kewpie doll on one of the crossbeams overhead and asked her sumpernother about was it supposed to mean anything. her reply:

"ohhhh, somebody put that there"

Brilliant!

Hector's may be a thread unto itself, but i didn't just eat there in the wee hours... one day I had 3 chili-cheeseburgers (not pita, old skool) at three different times.

Stromboli from the Italian Pizzeria on W. Franklin.

Tijuana Fats is gone as well, been meaning to ask don tho' if there is any chance at getting that green salad dressing recipe..... loved that stuff.

good sammiches at the Skylight Cafe.
