It probably was Maddox. I don't think Dick Allen ever had a large 'fro (he was a big sideburns guy for a portion of his career, though). I am surprised you don't remember Maddox's full beard, which would have still been somewhat unusual in 1976. Maddox was the first modern-day player to have such a beard, as he was given special permission (!) to grow it. Maddox served in Vietnam and was exposed to chemicals that made the skin on his face particularly sensitive.
you did read the part where i said i was five, dincha? i mean, maybe when you were five you could i.d. every major leaguer by their handlebar mustache, but i wasn't that developmentally accelerated i guess
