OK - tam had started a regular season one on the old board, but since only myself, him, and kong posted on there, I decided to try again.
I hope with all the different allegiances on here, we can have some good discussions.  Otherwise, I'll just keep posting schedules and results as well as my random thoughts.  I know, lame.

Three enormous games tonight as the Canes try and both solidify their tenuous playoff standing as well as drive a nail into the Make Me Laffs proverbial coffin.  Pittsburgh and Ottawa have key tilts to try and determine who will be in the top 4 and have home ice in their very likely first round matchup.

Out west both Colorado and Calgary have must wins prior to their home and home series later this week.  There continues to be a logjam at 3, 5, 6, and 7 in the Western Conference as the playoff matchups change every day.
Canes finally have a game-in-hand.
A month ago I didn't think the Canes would be in the playoff hunt.

Possible Canes-Sabres first round match up would be interesting.

In other news, according to nbc/verses there are only three teams in the league right now. Penguins, Red Wings and whomever they are playing.

If by "interesting" you mean "terrifying" I agree. All four games this year have been pretty ugly in the Sabres favor. Still, I'm hoping Canes hang on. They are getting hot at the right time (three straight wins, seven in the last ten, I think) Ladd has really come on strong lately. It would be nice to see Carter do anything at this point.

It would suck to be the first team since the Devils in '96 to win the SC and not make the playoffs the next year.

I have to say as well, that after all of the smack Oilers fans were talking on the HF boards about the Hurricanes and how the Oilers were robbed and would return to the SC this year, it's kind of funny to note that they're not even going to make the playoffs in the West. Ha.
What the hell was that? Defense looked awful (not all those goals were Ward's fault).

Will update the standings in a little bit ... looks like T-9th with a game in hand on 6-8 (who all lost, thank God).
Looks like Montreal jumped the Canes for that 8th spot tonight.

10 teams have clinched ... 6 to go ... 4 in the EC. Sharks magic number is 2 points. Nashville has the league lead in points (105) but is 2 games ahead of Buffalo and 1 game ahead on Detroit.

6 teams separated by 3 points. Gonna go down to the wire. Canes tied for 9th, but have edge on tied teams Toronto and Isles due to more wins, but need a little help (or winning out) to continue to move up again.
That was awful last night. Even though The Canes were down 4-1 when I went to bed, I thought it wouldn't be too bad since Montreal was down 2-0. I see they won 6-4.

The Canes looked bad last night.
After that showing last night I think it is "Goodbye Stanley"

Canes-Sabres would be ugly. Blood, fights and a lot of jawing.
And that's just Lindy alone.
Tongue
I have heard a lot of talk of the instigating penalty and that they should do away with it.  Think it was Melrose, said Bettman would never do it b/c that would not be PC.  He made some good points though, about retribition and stuff.
I actually wouldn't mind Buffalo having a great season if I didn't think Lindy Ruff was such a jerk. Many of the fans that made the trip to the RBC last year were pretty low class, too.

Excepting Karthi, of course.
Canes stinking it up again tonight against the worse in the east

And now Whitney scores with about four seconds left in the second
Thanks Ghost - there are alot of a-hole Sabres fans.  I went to 4 playoff games in the 1st 2 rounds for the Canes, but I skipped the entire Buffalo series (even as a Sabres fan) for that reason alone.  My friend told me enough stories that I ended up being glad I never went to any game.  The Wake board had some good discussion last year on the playoffs so I pretty much checked out there and a couple other hockey boards on the net.

I had some hope for the Canes tonight ... they played alright and getting that goal at the end of the 2nd was huge ... but now it's 4-1 ... oy ... Biron has stood on his head ...

Tripp Tracy, who often gets on my nerves, hit the nail on the head - there is a lack of desperation and physical play from most of the Canes tonight.  They were embarassed last night - expectation would be that they'd try and bounce back and not be knocked around ...

(take back my comment on Seidenberg ... whoops)
Walker has been a monster tonight ... hitting everything in sight ...

Sabres def. NJ 4-3
Atlanta ahead of Florida 2-1 (end 2)
Canes lose 5-1 ... Florida did tie up ATL 2-2 ... so perhaps they may get saved to a small degre if Florida wins in regulation or OT ...
canes lost to a really bad flyers team again. they are done.
Sharkies are in as of last night's win over the Kings.

7th spot with 98 points (and other points above them may have gone up!)? That's one helluva deep conference.

What do you Eastern folk think of our wealth of riches out this way? Big Grin
I don't follow the NHL much anymore, since they expanded to 374 teams, most of which I still don't know the names of.

I do, however, still follow college hockey, and my University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux recently beat the hated Gophers 3-2 in overtime to reach the Frozen Four for the 3rd consecutive year.

Porter's OT goal sends UND to Frozen Four.

don bosco

Go Fighting Sioux. My cuz is a prof there was the Director of Family Support at the Grand Forks Air Force Base) and is now a free lance contractor on the side. His son, also my cuz obviously, is a med prof there too. I spent some time on the campus just bumming around about 25 years ago. I need to get them to send me a new Fighting Sioux sweatshirt.
I think I recall you mentioning your cuz a while back. If you ever get a chance to see a hockey game in Englestadt Arena, don't miss it!

Have him send you a Sioux Hockey jersy, they're way cooler.

that was ugly!

time to start thinking about next year.
Whitney has probably priced himself out of being here next year
they have definitely folded.
I had this whole write up and my computer froze. Ugh. Tongue

Toronto Atlanta tonight ... Canes need both teams to not show up.

I like ND ... hope they or Maine wins it all.

PUDDY!

Were the Canes, Oilers a fluke? Damien Cox probes the question:

That Puddy episode always slays me.
Glad to see the Canes have showed up down the strech here ...

Really seems like noone wants to make the playoffs ...
