The first place I was ever a regular was Kirkpatrick's on Rosemary right beside what is now the Homeless Shelter.

Time do indeed change and now that spot at 108 West Rosemary is Syd's Hair Shop (owned and operated by a Chapel Hillian so big a Tar Heel that she named her little boy Dean after Coach).

Tim Kirkpatrick who went on to own Henderson Street Bar and started his career tending at Clarence's (which I just missed) was, obviously, the proprietor of this place. Good barmen as well with Mike Rogers and Mike Bledsoe serving them up. Only beer though. This was in the day of the .50 can of Schlitz...yep, Schiltz was a favorite back in those days.

Been around forever...The famous Blue Cups memorialize the place and remain in the reminescences of most Tar Heels.

The Blue Cup itself (mudwrestling tournament going on in the background)

Gotta get down there for an afternoon brew...April is indeed the time for it. Amazing how I can go by there about once a year on a Spring afternoon and run into several folks that I know, some who never leave and usually another one or two doing the same thing as me.
I miss blue cups too ... MsK02 and I frequented there when we started dating ... summer nights there were always fun. Seemed like you'd always bump into someone you knew there.

My first regular place was Henderson Street ... fun little place (alot of us roller hockey dudes would meet up there after a skate with the Women's Soccer team/coaches).

So sad what happened to the owner.
to clarify, that^ was Kevin, not TimK.

donnie, any news of Tim? last time i was by, HSt had been sold and they didn't even know him in there....
kid - are you saying Kevin was the one who died? I am so forgetful w/ names ...
HSt last summer was Hectors for a brief time ... very bizarro ... not sure what it is now ...
tdm and I went to He's Not a couple of Tuesdays ago. Haven't been there for several years. Of course I ran into a regular who apparantly hadn't moved from his stool in all those years. Some things never change. It was nice to sit outside and quaff a couple of cold ones.
K, a few years back yes. I certainly hope nothing has happened to Tim but i feel sure i would have gotten word if that were the case.

Kevin bought the bar from Tim & owned Zog's, IIRC. don't know for sure, but it either reverted to Tim on default of a note or by sale but he then sold it again... that's a bit of speculation on my part as to those details.

Kevin was the "in between" owner of Henderson St. that committed suicide. TimKirkpatrick opened the place, then sold it to Kevin, then took it back over when he died. Kevin was also a part owner, I believe, of The Dead Mule, but that's another story for later.

Henderson St. did a stint as a couple of other short-lived bar/restaurants but then became Hector's

I'm not quite sure what is going on with Hector's right now...it is upstairs over the old spot right?

Dont' know what is up with Tim Kid...this is the longest I've gone without seeing him.
he had a boat in Morehead City, IIRC, he had sold it but may have bought another or moved down thataway. memory cloudy.

anyway, back to the bars!
Don (or anyone else), do you remember the name of the liquor bar that was upstairs from Troll's? It faced Rosemary street. I've been racking my brain, but I can't remember. Another one I forget the name of was on Airport Rd. in the A&P shopping center. There was a laundromat next door, so you could go have a few beers and throw some darts while doing your laundry.

When I was a freshman (fall 1977), Kirk's was still happening, but it's popularity faded over the next year or so. Some other joints I remember:

The Bacchae
Mayo's
Mad Hatter (one of my favorite places)

And of course Troll's, He's Not Here, and Cat's Cradle were always very popular.

Liquor bar was The Last Refuge...Sam Troll and Cynthia owned it. They had a restaurant there for a while...kinda fancy it was. A buddy of mine, and housemate at the time, tended. Or maybe you're thinking of the second floor bar...Jordan's Le Charlois(sp?)...was a steakhouse that went all bar around '79-80.

On Airport Road was The Pub...woman whose name started with a B owned it...guy named Stan started it up. They claimed it was Chapel Hill's oldest continuously running bar.

Wow...that thread puts me in my place don't it.
^ Yes, Jordan's is what I was thinking of. Thanks!
I went to UNC during two eras. In the 80s I liked Trolls and Henderson St. And, I have to admit I had fun at Purdy's or whatever it was called. (Kept changing names).

In the 90s I liked going to downstairs Linda's. And on Wed that place above 4 corners had a good crowd... can't remember the name of it, though.

But my favorite bar during college was not in Chapel Hill. I loved going to the Fallout Shelter in Raleigh on Saturday nights. Loved that industrial dancing and hot gothic girls.
to clarify, Sam & Cynthia's upscale place was The Last Resort.

Jordan's was a cool spot; those Simultaneous Foreplay and Orgasms ratcheted any buzz up to the next level.

can't remember the name o' the place by the A&P either... ee, what was the place on the way into Carrboro near Al's Garage? wasn't that also "the Fallout Shelter"?
