I've landed two largemouth over 5 lbs in the past 10 days. Green pumpkin seems to be the color of choice for bass these days. I'm looking forward to going after the crappie though. I've got a great filet knife and with decent sized fish, peanut oil, a little House Autry breader and my cast iron fish cooker...mmmmmmmm gooooood eats!
I love your ending for the crappies. It does not get any better.

Are you guys fishing the spawn now?

I haven't noticed any worn or bloody tails yet. One bass had a bit of a red mouth but the rest were just good solid healthy bass. My dad came over to the house and he brought some trout that he caught at the coast and a few crappie and we cooked them all up, they were both excellent.

Most of the fish I've caught(foothills) have been staging. I look for them to spawn shortly...Easter weekend I'm headed home to Burgaw for some pond fishing. 1 pond 70 acres, second 35 acres, 3rd 10 acres....This should be perfect to catch some large females. I'll give a report If anyones Interested.
I'll be interested to see how it goes for you whitwolf. Share with me some of what you're doing and what you're using too. For me right now I've been doing something I've done for a little over a year now. To keep my bait off the bottom (Zoom brushhogs and lizards) I'm using a standard texas rig with a bead behind the bullet weight. I pull the weight and bead up about 18 inches and peg the bead with a toothpick. This allows the bait to stay off the bottom slightly and it still gets the clicking noise from the weight hitting the bead. This technique has landed some quality fish for me over the past year or so.
ElDuke....The majority of my fish this Winter/Spring have come on crankbaits, specifically Rapala #7 shadrap, a Suddreth bream colored crankbait(They don't make these anymore) and a rebel weeR TN shad. The water Is still kind of chilly up here in the foothills(Hickory) to fish many plastics but have caught a few bass on jigs(outlaw, made in casar).....Browncraw with a watermellon Zoom super chunk junior, trailer.

I have caught nothing of real size, the biggest has been three pounds and several dozen peckerheards.

As for the Easter trip, we do this every year and It's not uncommon to catch 40-80 bass in a 6-8 hour day on the water. I'll post a full report.

Tight lines and calm seas gentleman.
ElDuke, Is that not a standard old Carolina Rig?

The only thing I do different is bead, weight, bead, swivel, leader, bait. Lots of noise with the the 2 beads.

Na, a Carolina rig is generally an egg sinker, then a bead, then it's tied to a swivel. Then you tie on an 18 or so inch leader and tie the end to your hook.

Wuffey, I hooked you up with a new title. Let me know if you want it changed.
7 pounder Saturday on a Zoom lizard..green pumpkin seems to be the color of choice these days. Also a little action on top water. Lunker lure snagged a couple and my buddy was catching quite a few small ones on the pop-r.
I'm jealous.

I guess the we'll call the pegged t-rig the "elduke" rig. I tie a light c rig with a 1/4 oz bullet instead of an egg sinker. Your way would be way faster and still achieve a floating bait. I never put much stock in the noisy part of the C-rig anyway.

Thanks for the tittle there 79, I love it.
Packherb is a fishing buddy of mine and he uses the standard c-rig with the egg sinker and at times it just works better. I just dont care for swivels that much or for having to re-tie my line in three different places when I break off.
Got a favorite top water bait?
Storm Chug bug. I don't think color really matters with a topwater but the one I like the best is green/brown, sort of a frog pattern.

If not the Chug Bug I have a silver/white Rebel Pop r that is also money.

The thing about topwater baits is you rarely lose them so you can get real attached to them.

Me and little Pot Hole are going after them Saturday.  I'll report back on how we do.
Pot Hole--excellent avatar!

Good look Saturday. Perhaps some pics of little PH with his catch?
Sorry for the delay gentleman......Here's the report from the Easter trip down home to Burgaw. Sucked!

We landed 17 on Friday most on a pumpkin/green zoom dead ringer with a few coming on a Smithwick rattlin' rouge suspending jerkbait. The wind was terrible.

Saturday we landed 12 in 20-30 mph steady winds with gusts to 40. once again the Zoom pumpkin/green 4" dead ringer did most of the damage with two better fish caught on a browncraw outlaw jig tipped with a Zoom watermellon superchunk Jr.

The weather prior to my arrival was in the low 80's but on Friday It only got to the upper 50's with lows In the 30's. It's the worst weather we've had for this time of year.(have been on this trip every year at Easter since '87) Like I said In an earlier post It's not uncommon to catch at least 40 bass a day. This was plain miserable and tough, tough, fishing.

We went out Yesterday for 3 hours back up here in the foothills(Hickory, Lake Rhodhiss) and did fairly well....two In the three to four lb. range on crankbaits(suddreth, yellow back/orange belly) and my buddy landed a 6+ on a Zoom big tube, green pumpkin.

I was going to take lil' whit out tomorrow but it looks like rain......

Tight lines and calm seas...
Green pumpkin has been rockin for me this year as well.  Zoom Lizards and Brushhogs have done very well. Saturday was one of my best days yet here in the RTP.  Sounds like you faced some tough conditions but you still landed a bunch of good sized fish.  I'll have to get a few green pumpkin dead ringers and test them out here.

Oh and seeing as no one seems to be here...hee hee

I snagged one of those last night El, but it wasn't all sandy like that one.
