Regardless of Duke win. Butler almost pulled a David if the ball would went in. But where do you rank this Championship of the past National Championships game? I thought it was a very exciting game of course being a Duke fan last night game was very tense to me so I can going to re watch the game today on my DVR. But what an exciting Championship game and I think its a instant classic. I think it will rank very close to the top or even number 1 great championship in college basketball history. What do you think?
Greatest championship game ever? No. Biased me says 1983.
This was the best NCAA Tourny I have ever seen. So many great games and so many improbable outcomes. The game last night was a great game. If that half court shot had gone in, it might have become the best ever.
Yup, if Butler had won with a buzzer beater, hands down the best ever.
As it ended? Obviously a great game, but I don't have a long enough memory of championship games to be able to properly rank it.
Right off hand I can think of 9 other better championship games - the
5 Carolina has won and the other 4 dook lost in the finals (IIRC they've played in 8 finals).

i'm down with that line of thinking
it was a very good game. as much as i hate to say it, this dook team doesn't really rate very high on the Hate Meter. Also, i think the "David" role for Butler was ridiculous... i understand the comparative budget and lack of experience at this level, but this team is simply a very, very good team... tenacious on "D" with a full roster of kids ready to play.
I think dook's height got them in the final equation, but it was a virtually even game and i don't think for a minute that Butler was playing over it's head; in fact, a more normal game from the line and they're burning down the house.

You forgot to mention how many Finals carolina has lost ( just in the interest of completeness ).
in terms of upsets, the mere fact that Butler as a mid-major was there and came within a possesion of winning ranks it first, ahead of Valvano's title. it just doesn't happen very often
in terms of play, it was butt ugly in some respects, though there were great plays among the carnage. I thought the officials allowed way too much contact and it benefited Butler far more. Zoubek was shoved out of bounds from offensive rebounding postions several times, yet Hayward went to the line if he was tappped. Butler took full advantage almost as if they prepared for it.
gotta hand to to Brad Stevens though for having a game plan that almost worked with way less talent. tremendous execution on both ends by Butler. took Duke out of a lot of their offense and got the shots they wanted themselves for the most part, though Duke found a way to break the big three open for just enough scores, barely
definitely will be brought up often
As a Duke fan, it wasn't the best ever. Fans of the teams playing don't want a competitive, interesting game. We want a blow out of West Virginian proportions. If Duke would have lost to Butler, they would never be able to live that down. Losing to a team in the Horizon League? My God, who does Butler play in conference? UIC? St. Mary's School of the Blind? Therefore, I chose the 91' Duke championship as the best ever.
But as a guy who loves college basketball, it's up there pretty high. Probably top 5.
chipster, I'm well aware of Carolina's championship game whiffs. They just don't qualify as any of the "better championship games".
This year was a really good game, and a pretty good one as far as championship games go. As for all time best championship game, even w/o my obvious Carolina bias, the '57 triple overtime win over Wilt Chamberlain & Kansas has to be right up there near, if not at, the top.
'57 was the best IMHO. This game was not particularly good except for the close score. Duke had better games during the tournament.
Monday night's game was at least in the top four!

1) 1991
2) 2001
3) 2010
4) 1992

That is Perfect

A favorite nearly gets beaten by a mid-major...
I'd rather see two 1-seeds "dook" it out in a tight game.
I rank it one bucket from being supercalifragulisticexpialidocius.
