awakened by loud crash on my roof at 5:30 a.m. wind whipping here. filled bathtub for flushing water. electricity bound to go out. can't see what happened until light comes. hope it's not a huge tree branch...

ack

BOOM

forecast for sustained 50 mph winds until 9 p.m. tonight. must think about those with snow. must be scary up north.
chups--a crash on the roof does NOT sound good. I hope your roof still has its integrity. Definitely get yourself some water reserves in preparation for power outages if you are on a well.

We have our fingers crossed but I am not optimistic. I'm feeling like we have a better than even chance of being KO'd for days. If y'all see me go silent you will know what happened.

At least we had several major problem trees near the house trimmed back or removed in the last couple of years. We still lost at least 5 trees last Saturday and will no doubt lose more today. I have my chain saw ready.
chups, please wait until daylight to go investigate! Might be live wires down in the area too and we don't want you lighting up like a Christmas tree! Lots of wind here this morning, but the western burbs came out of this storm a heck of a lot better than predicted.
Good luck to ya, gal!
obviously i am not in a bad way compared to you all up north. deterp, the lines in my backwoods neighborhood are buried so don't have to worry about that, but am waiting for light and dawn has begun. tenmile, hearing about your snow really made me grateful to have not gotten hit by two huge snow storms. be careful out there! water is collected and warmth isn't a problem as heat comes from a wood stove.
chupa, as reported in the "snow" thread I'm a lot better off than what Chicago weather is giving out as snow totals. Being in the west "sticks" has it's perks except, as you'll find in the new thread I just created, when the ground decides to move. Been quite a couple days around here. (sigh)
Round two has started with a vengeance. The temperature is 29.3 so this is a wet snow and sticking to all the snow that was still up in the trees and then some. We've got over a half a foot right now and it is coming down pretty hard. It seems like we are a lock to pick up a total of about a foot today.

Fortunately Mrs. T got me some great snow boots (Sorel Alpha Pak) that seem just about perfect. Lightweight, somfortable, great traction, waterproof, breathable, tall and with built in gaiters that keep snow out and rated to -60F. I have worked outside all this time without getting cold or wet feet and having great traction, and that includes wading through snow up past my knees. The only times I've worked without them have been when I was operating my chain saw (I insist on wearing steel toes when I do that work) or when I've had my driveway completely cleared.
tin roof looks okay. medium sized branch dropped and bounced off house.

deterp, will check out other threads.
glad you're ok. we got maybe 4 inches last night but it's really coming down now, coworkers sending out their "working from home" emails, myself included. pouring some tea, settling in. supposed to get the wind here later. have never had a power outage in this city side from the northeast blackout of 2003.
chupa, I'm glad that's all it was at your house. Probably pretty noisy on that kind of roof.
Pictures on the news site of the storm....terrible! You folks stay safe!
Thank God Chupa. I was holding my breath as I was reading through this thread.

So happy your roof and you (not in that order) are safe.
This wind is incredible!! Glad your roof is safe Chups. And the rest of you - hope you stay warm at home.

We have a couple of tall crappy pines leaning a bit more than usual but they are far enough from the house that I am not worried. I do worry about our teeny feral adoptee Kitteh Kitteh Lovey. She barely weighs 7 lbs! Hopefully she has had enough outdoor romping and is in for the day! I can just imagine seeing her blowing across the yard like Winnie the Pooh on that Blustery Day! (One of my fav Disney/Pooh cartoons!)
Mrs Wolf was ADAMANT last night that I get the chairs and table off the back porch and put them in the garage. I said, ehhhhh, I'll get 'em in the AM before I head out.

Needless to say, I put them in the garage last night. Icon12
