Full Version: I’m getting harassed by the Yellow Pages!

We get fast talking foreign speaking telemarketers calling here daily claiming to be updating our free “Yellow Pages” listing information. They ask for information that they couldn’t possibly need. They ask for Birth date, SSN of employee. I have informed all of my people to hang up. I reported it to our phone vendor AT&T but was told there was nothing they could do about it as the FCC protects the practice. AT&T did advise me to read my invoices from them carefully because these people could slip something on the invoice and AT&T is not allowed to stop it. How irritating is that?
Very, very irritating. Can you put your business phone numbers on the "do not call" list? Or are these companies you have actually done business with in the past?

They claim that they are calling on behalf of "The Real Yellow pages" who I have advertised with in the past but this is not a print add they are selling but a "free" on line listing that actually begins billing if you fail to cancel after the first month. They do not take no for an answer.
Start asking for names of supervisors, phone numbers, addresses and tell 'em you are going to inform your State Attorney General of their activities if they do not immediately cease and desist. Then do it if you have to.
I believe you can instruct AT&T to prevent future 3rd-Party Billing, but I think the Crooks on Capitol Hill did in fact some rule that forces AT&T to do as they say unless you demand otherwise.
I have been called at home and at work by people trying to verify the information about my business though I don't know about their asking for personal info like social security etc because they never get that far with me. I don't know why in the heck they think I'm in charge of an organization they want to list--maybe some of my work in the past.

I could see how this would be a great way to fish for personal information if victims think an enhanced listing will bring them business.
