Democrat and long time Speaker of the House Tip O'Neill nicknamed Byrd "Sheets" for his past history as a clansman.
monkey see, monkey do?
Not a bad fiddler at all. Probably self taught.

Just informed Vid the other day that Mr. Byrd is distant kin-folk on my Daddy's side. Vid thought I was kidding but somewhere my Daddy has it all "wrote down."

Didn't stop me.
Exactly! Remember - you can't choose your relatives!
Well.. the "first tirade" that comes to mind is over Byrd during "Zippergate" w/ Clinton. During the hearings or whatever they were, I remember seeing Byrd on the evening news. Talking in the halls of congress. He was ancient then. Anyway.....he was "pattin' " the breast pocket on his jacket, talkin' about the sex scandle and saying, " I always carrah the kaaahn-stAH-toooSHEN right here. I don't needz to know what Mistah Kennef Staaah is up to, I gotz the kaaaahn-stAH-tooooSHEN righ-eyet, he-yar."

Next post, we'll discuss "porkiness in WV"
Along with Ted Kennedy, Ted Stevens and Strom Thurmond, one of the worst senators we've ever had.
I've always heard him referred to as "Robert KKK Byrd".
you know, we can all offer opinions on why we think certain politicians suck, but why is the kneejerk reaction to raise the klan issue when the man clearly did some soul searching and did everything he could to make up for that particular mistake of the past? bush supporters believe being born again absolved bush of a lot. some of the same folks who perpetually raise the klan issue seem silent on the blatant racism of say, jesse helms. am i missing something?
^True. Have to give the man the benefit of the doubt. He gave up a group that lynched people for a group in congress that lynches wallets.
Byrd, like Helms and Thurmond before him, stayed in office too long. He really needs to retire.

well, i was looking for a serious answer. but it ultimately isn't up to us to judge. was he involved in a lynching? i just find the forgiveness and redemption thing fascinating and am especially interested in the opinions of those who consider themselves christian. i may detest bush, but i'm not going to second guess his claim that his faith saved him. i'm pretty convinced that one's POV is directly related to politics.

[deleted long-winded tirade]

I apologize Mama'. I tried to give a serious answer. But where Byrd is concerned I cannot post without going into a red-faced tirade over his pork. If someone can get beyond the past, then yes, I can forgive. But I cannot get beyond Byrd's present.

This is one of those threads where it would be better off if I didn't post. Byrd brings out the worst in me, and that's not good.

no apology necessary at all. again, i'm less interested in his politics because everyone has their gripes, but i guess they can't be separated.
You are less interested in his politics than what? Taking cheap shots at the politics of others?

where did i take a "cheap shot"? it's an earnest question so i don't understand where you're coming from. so, do you have an opinion on redemption or are you just wanting to pick a fight because, apparently, you disagreed with something i said?
My apologies if I miss understood your monkey see monkey do comment. Any way as I explained in my email reply I disagree strongly with Mr. Byrd’s politics both past and present and with the way he conducts his business. His music isn’t bad though.
