Look, I'm not one to blame the refs. Our defense (or lack thereof) lost this game. But regarding the refs--how imcompetent can they get before something is done? Even my wife, who is a big dook fan and normally doesn't fall for my "the refs suck" commentary, admitted that Tyler got pounded on at least three occasions with no calls. And to make it worse, when they show the replay where it's obviously a foul, those moron announcers can only gush about "great defensive play". No, it's terrible refs, that's what it is.
I just hope Roy sends the tape to somebody.
But about our defense...ugh.

I would have thought that the refs would try to be more subtle when fixing a game.
obviously not.
That was completely outrageous and should be investigated for criminal wrongdoing.
that was seriously outrageous and very unfair to the players on both sides.
outrageous and blatant.
Agreed. Md. needed a [Steve]quality win[/REPETITION Lavin]. Watch the pUKE game next week.
SHEESH!
OK...I admit that I was distracted by many things during the game. I deserve some blame for not going where I go and doing what I do. That said...can someone explain to me what happened, oh some time in the last two to three minutes when Hansbrough received a pass from Lawson, went up from just outside of lay-up range, a maryland player came on him from behind, climbed his back, hacked his arm, then got ball, propelling the shot out of bounds while at the same time a maryland player was easing himself under Hansbrough causing all three to fall to the floor. And maryland was awarded the ball.
What happened there?
Was that before or after they tackled Lawson?
Lot's of BS. The final play of the first half was a series of uncalled fouls. There were more.
Maybe they will start listening to Roy.
Here's my chicken reply:
RE: Chicken Award®: Maryland
To point... this is my first post this whole damn season, and while I rarely put crap on the refs, I would note two instances in this game: the multi-no-call foul on Hansbrough towards the end of regulation, and the horrible charge call that took Danny out of the game in overtime. (Un)believably, they actually replayed both of these plays and the ridiculous commentators provided no insight... The commentary wasn't worth jack of course. It was all about the possibility of an upset.
That said, the reffing was pretty poor throughout the game and hit both ways, and we needed to do better.
Deon and Ty did well. Bobby got lot of strong rebounds. Danny made some nice moves. Hansbrough and Ellington didn't pull it off.
hrmmph. kirk.
I think Tyler is really hurting his draft status with his play. I've never seen a guy get blocked or stripped more than he does. He brings the ball down or is given the ball quite low very often. He doesn't pass out of the double/triple team very often. He forces shots. He doesn't block many shots, backs off playing defense when he picks up fouls and doesn't always help when he should. He used to get the calls, but apparently the prevailing trend now is to let him take a beating.
Staying four years at least means he'll get a degree and can get a job because if he plays like this in the pros he won't last long.
Don't get me wrong, he does some good things. He hits freethrows, fights hard for offensive rebounds, draws charges, etc. That isn't enough to base a pro career on.
I hate to say it, but you got some good points bomber... his babyface confused look doesn't help when he gets an unexpected pass and bricks it. I seriously hope he can somehow manage to get the 120 points to pass Reddick, but it's looking more doubtful as the games go on. That and somehow it seems like he gets more uncalled fouls than trips to the line.

db-- this was incorrectly called as a charge on Hansbrough. The replay is classic-- the guy who makes the block from behind is pushing Tyler forward, running into a Terp under the basket, hence the charge call.

I made this same point after the UMiami game, and several posters suggested Ty was injured, inhibiting his performance.
I'm not gonna rag on the All-American but would suggest if he can't adapt his game to the intensity of the defense, Roy should work on developing the freshmen.
I think Hansbrough needs to bring real pain to the folks guarding him from here on out.
Tyler is a great college player, but is late first round draft pick at best..maybe 2nd round.
Its truly sad to see what the refs do to teams in the HS gym. Wake is getting raped.
Come on! Can't blame the refs (don't we complain about Duke whining) and you can't put it off on TH. The entire team just choked. Not like this is first time we have seen a UNC team lose focus for no apparent reason. Suspect a lot of folks were just expecting too much this year.
I don't want to give the impression that I'm putting it on Tyler. I'm just disappointed for him and a little puzzled at his struggles. Part of the problem, I believe, at the end of the game was that they weren't going inside to Tyler. We had had a tendency in games where we've struggled to settle for the quick three pointer near the end and we've missed them. That's mostly Ellington and Green. Hopefully we would get fouled inside or hit a high percentage shot.

I certainly agree that Tyler is struggling, but I don't think the problem was not going inside to him at the end. I just rewatched the game, and we got the ball into Tyler several times in the last few minutes, but many of those times, he acted like he didn't even want the ball and passed it right back out.
I don't know what the deal is, but I've never seen Tyler playing with the obvious lack of confidence he's playing with right now. Whatever it is, I hope he gets it ironed out soon, because without him regularly getting his 20 and 7, with frequent trips to the line, we're going to be in big trouble come march.
I'm thinking about the period when we were losing a lead just before that, I guess. We have thrown up some poor, quick shots in the past at that point.
Tyler probably figures he'll get hammered or stripped and nothing called if he's backing off, but we weren't hitting shots from the outside by then. He needs to get the ball up on the rim against a team that's smaller than we are. Even if he misses we have a decent chance of a rebound, or we should.
Oh, and don't forget, we're a football school anyway.

I just wanted to add that there were a number of reffing "gems" in the dook-wake game yesterday, most of which were in dook's favor (surprising, I know.) I'm starting to think the league would be better off playing without refs, using playground rules!
John Clougherty and by extension John Swofford should be ashamed of the complete & utter wastes of protoplasm that they are allowing to don striped shirts in the name of the ACC. Gerald Henderson's right elbow should be quite stiff after being stuck out the entire game in the chicken-wing position.

chick soccer
The calls that bugged me were (i) the absurd charge on Tyler when he was tackled from behind for supposed block, (ii) the mugging of Ty Lawson in the back court (no call) that led to eventual UMd lay-up, (iii) the "screen" by UMd guard in OT that was actually a pancake block on Lawson, freeing Vazquez to be wide open at the top of the key.
But our guys make one more free throw here or there, hit a shot here or there, and it is STILL all moot.
Three conference losses, three eye-popping stat-lines:
Rice: 25 points (2-6 3FG), 8 assists, 5 rebounds
Teague: 34 points, 4 assists, 6 rebounds
Vasquez: 35 points, 10 assists, 11 rebounds
One near miss (FSU, game with same trajectory as UMd game but for Lawson's shot):
Douglas: 32 points, 1 assist, 2 rebounds
hmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Roy needs to get a district court to issue a restraining order to keep Karl Hess within 200 yards from Roy. In that way, he won't be able to referee any more Carolina games. My God, that crew was so blatantly terrible in the last five minutes and OT. And after the game had four whistles in the first two minutes....come on!
We know that overdogs on an opponent's home floor aren't gonna get the benefits of calls, but to allow that kind of bull$hi+ is just sad. Watch and see if the Twerps get that same kind of home-cookin' vs. the Evils on Wednesday. Betcha they don't! And they'll lose by 20!
